Why did I leave Hong Kong?

On the Christmas eve 2005, I was dressing to go party in Banjala Hills, my flat mate Siti from Malaysia saw my dress and said,” Oh, that’s so Hong Kong, Meicy.” My collar of coat was upstanding, with skirt above the knee and high heels—that’s very Honky for Siti. “Yeah, all these clothes are bought in Hong Kong expect the high heels,” I said.

I brought the silhouette of Hong Kong to India, and the Honky hairstyle as well. However, when somebody says,” Your hairstyle is very Hong Kong,” remember, that’s not a compliment at all. Most of the trainees in Hong Kong got Honky hair and we laughed at each other for this.

Anyway, people ask me why I chose to leave Hong Kong since I had great time there. I could have stayed there for 7 years and then get a permanent resident card—though that sounds crazy for me. I knew that I’d done Hong Kong. My advantage there comparing to other foreigners is that I can communicate with the local in Cantonese. That brings me a clear and complete picture of Hong Kong. After 9 months, I become the local and life is predictable for me.

I knew that even if I leave Hong Kong, I wouldn’t lose my friends there. It’s like when you leave your home town, you wouldn’t feel like you would have lost it forever. Hong Kong has become my second hometown other than Taiwan. It’s a good stopover for many people. I stopped by at the age of 22. The tie between us is still there. The friendship I built didn’t fall apart.

I am happy that I left Hong Kong and come to India.

I’d dedicate this article especially to Nikos from Greece. After reading your mail, I started writing it.

To all my friends in Hong Kong.

Hola! Goa!!

Skull vs. Candy

In Friends, there is an episode talking about Christmas and Phoebe brought her mother’s skull to Monica’s house. She said that her mother always put the skull on a table in Christmas to remind them that “Even it’s Christmas, people still die.”

It’s a cruel fact with funny expression. And I would have still thought it’s funny until this cruel fact happened on people around me.

I just came back from a 6 days trip in Goa. The train came back to Hyderabad at 5.o’clock this morning. I went to the office at 8.am, couldn’t wait to tell my friends how beautiful Goa is. When I signed in to MSN, I saw one of my Elementary School classmates online; his display name says his mother died two weeks ago. I was shocked. I knew his mother since I was a kid. Though we didn’t contact each other for a long time, I can still remember the figure of his mom. And his mom died at such a young age, 53. Dreadful thing doesn’t stop happening for people to celebrate festivals.

When Phoebe put candy in the skull, everyone still grab one. Candies would not become sour just because it was put in a skull. Sweet thing is still sweet…so let’s talk about Goa now.

Train Safari

From Hyderabad to Goa by train is around 22 hours. Again, in this huge country, 22 hours by train should be considered normal. (I know it’s abnormal for Taiwanese and especially for Honky.) And again, it was not that bad. It’s like join an Indian train safari. When the train was moving, the picture of India kept change as well. I liked to sit at the door side when the train was running in the day time. Read a book about India and see the moving pictures of India, that’s an exclusive luxury for train travelers. I enjoyed it a lot.

Goa Goa!

Goa is in the west side of India, facing Arabian Sea. Gorgeous beaches, sunshine and parties are what this place is famous for. It’s winter for Indians but summer for foreigners. The temperature was around 28-32 C during New Year holidays so girls wear bikini and boys wear short pant only on the beach. Even “holy cows” also enjoyed the breeze from the Arabian Sea, lying on the beach naked and being lazy. There are no disparity between human beings and animals. Every creature deserves this luxury lifestyle in Goa.

I stayed in small Vagator, one of the small beaches in the north. When I got there, there wasn’t enough room for me and some of my friends. It was impossible to find a spare room at that time. I was lucky, one of my friends stayed in another hotel with her mom and let us slept there for 2 days until we find another place. It’s better to book a room before going to Goa for Christmas or New Year.

Goa is all about beautiful beaches, sunshine, blue sky and exotic food. There’s no need to put other adjective ahead of these noun. Put these nouns together is attractive enough.

However, I still can’t believe that I left Goa without going any single beach party. All the beach parties start at 4am. I couldn’t go party at 4 am so it’s better to skip it and have a nice sleep. I did go to a “Jungle Party”. It’s my first time to party in a forest. The DJ played trenz music and lots people got high. Sober people like me can have a cup of Chai and a piece of cake there as well. It’s an Indian style jungle party.

That’s how I embrace the start of the Year 2006.
